Our Mission

Through education, empowerment, and the creation of sustainable community solutions, we will help indigenous communities in Honduras maintain a higher standard of living without sacrificing their health.

Our Story

Step Up For Honduras is a nonprofit organization founded in 2016. Our work began when founder Ernie Valle visited a remote town in Honduras and bore witness to the alarming effects that irresponsible mining has had in this beautiful region of the world.

During his first visit to Honduras, Ernie couldn’t help but notice many issues that the children in these communities were facing. He and his colleagues also saw how the community as a whole was struggling due to the environmental impact of harmful mining. Ever since, he has made many trips back to Honduras accompanied by his wife and numerous volunteers, and our mission has always been the same: to share love, spread faith, give hope, and help as much as we possibly can. Why? Simply, because we care. We care about the children who are part of our shared future, and about the indigenous residents of this beautiful country who haven’t been given the same opportunities as some others.

Step Up For Honduras was created as a way to deliver concrete solutions to those who need compassionate, respectful support as they work towards living better lives. We have delighted in the warmth and hospitality of the indigenous people who have long lived in this area, and we feel an obligation to leverage our resources to create healthy, culturally appropriate supports in this unique and beautiful community.

The Problem

Honduras is plagued with a dire shortage of sustainable systems to support the environment and the health, safety, and well-being of all residents.

In Honduras, one of Central America’s poorest nations, artisanal miners use dangerous amounts of toxic mercury to extract the metal from the rocks they chip out. The communities there have had to deal with the effects of this on their environment, as well as a serious lack of sustainable systems to support the health, safety, and well-being of all residents. We have seen the circumstances that young children and families must deal with, and we’ve seen a serious lack of access to the basic and vital needs that all children need to thrive, like clean water and food, access to health care, and safe schools.

Our Solution

The Step Up For Honduras Foundation aims to change this unfortunate set of circumstances.

We hope to achieve this through raising the awareness of local community groups in order to empower them to maintain a better standard of living without sacrificing their health. This initiative includes construction of schools, roads, and mining infrastructure, in tandem with the logistical support and consultative guidance required for a better future—one free of environmental and economic injustice. The focus of our involvement is to build culturally appropriate, sustainable solutions for some of the most vulnerable people in one of the poorest nations in the world.

Tackling the biggest problems in Honduras

We’re committed to doing our part to make this part of the world a better place
for the local and indigenous communities who call Honduras home.
